Adding a Touch of Glamour to Your Home Without Breaking the Bank

Over the years I have acquired so many pieces that I absolutely adore, but i would only pull them out for special occasions. I realized why not use special occasion pieces everyday, especially those you love.

To bring in basics to accompany your meaningful statement pieces I’m a big fan of Target and IKEA. I advise having general pieces in mind vs. limiting your search to specific items. You have to be open to the possibility of finding unexpected pieces and realize the different ways they can be used. Much like finding the essentials of a wardrobe, basics are a necessary. Whether it’s a desk chair or a white t-shirt, rarely do they need to come with an expensive price tag.

I recently had one of my clients go with a white bookcase from IKEA. Her immediate reaction was “too mass market”. I asked she think about it like a blank canvas. There is nothing wrong with buying furniture that several other people also have; simply make it your own and accessorizing it with one-of-a-kind, unique accessories.

Still unsure how it would work but certain she wanted to display her extensive book collection, I suggested we accessorize the bookcase with a functional piece of art. We ended up hanging her bike on the only large wall in her tiny apartment with the bookcase below it. It looks amazing and we solved two challenges – book display and bike storage! It’s all about adding those little elements of glamour like red lipstick when running out for errands.

Here are four easy ways to make your home more glamorous but still accessible:

  1. Add an accent Chair in an unused corner and stacking some books
  2. Hang a mirror on an unused wall (one of my favorite ways of brining in a little depth to a small bedroom is adding a mirror over a night stand)
  3. Throw blankets and pillows
  4. Trays! Trays! Tray! use them in every room to gather odds and ends. It will add instant polish.
