A Family-style Feast at Ledlow

A Family-style Feast at Ledlow

(and how fried chicken can inspire interior design ideas)

Monday night, family-style fried chicken at Ledlow is probably the best in L.A., and I know because my family of 12 just took them up on it. Our meal consisted of the most incredible fried chicken ever with creamy mashed potatoes, cornbread with bacon, biscuits and gravy, and, last but not least, an other worldly ambrosia they called coleslaw.

Between our oohing, ahhing and OMG-ing, my family took turns throwing out adjectives to describe our meal. I think we even made up a few, because the words we knew weren’t sufficient to describe this explosion of deliciousness. Then came dessert: rice pudding and bread pudding. All brought to us by our courteous and knowledgeable waiter, Christian.

Our meal was so amazing that I almost forgot to appreciate the gorgeous surroundings. Almost. Ledlow is owned by Josef Centeno, who also owns Bäco Mercat, Bar Amá, and Orsa & Winston, so you know it is impeccably designed.

Ledlow is located at 4th and Maine in the Old Bank District. It is styled to look like a Parisian Café, and it is equally well suited for a midday meal with friends. The simple and beautifully decorated dining room features high ceilings and a clean, modern black and white theme throughout.

What really caught my eye was the lighting. It is so unique that it took me a moment to place, but then it hit me. Ledlow is the perfect backdrop for the eclectic charm of Schoolhouse Lighting.

If you’ve never heard of Schoolhouse Lighting, you are in for a treat. These timeless fixtures are designed to look like classroom, library, and kitchen lights in the 1920s, with clean, utilitarian lines and practical light-diffusing shades. The choice to install Schoolhouse lights in Ledlow was an inspired one, and it reminded me how often a small detail can have such a big impact on a room.

Before leaving Ledlow that day, I made a mental note to share some images of Schoolhouse Lights with my readers, and to go back to try the duck. I’ll be sure to take pictures.

LOVE Ledlow. Your blog entry describes my experience there perfectly. The rice pudding is the best I’ve ever tasted. Can’t wait to go back.
